A Personal Commentary
My 15th birthday had recently passed and the news of the Squalus Sinking was on the radio and in headlines across this country and
most probably around the world.
The massive rescue attempts were reported daily.
America was starting to come out of a great depression. I remember it well.
The three year Spanish Civil War was at an end. The years 1939-1941 were
marked by a series of German victories under the Blitzkreig Doctrine.
It would not be long, before America would be in the thick of a World War.
By the middle of 1940 France had been overrun.
The evacuation of Dunkirk made the news.
Most WWII veterans remember these years. If you were not in the service, you soon would have the opportunity to wait for the draft or enlist in the
service of your choice. At age 18, I chose the Navy.
