INTRODUCTION TO THE STORIES OF
THE 52 BOATS LOST DURING WWII

By: Paul Wittmer

The artwork presented, as this section is opened was done by the US Submarine Veterans of WWII National Artist, Steve Petreshock.

This section has been compiled, essentially from one of the first books published on this subject. The book "U.S. Submarine Losses, World War II"; was originally prepared by: The Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, dated 1946. Since that time, additional names of the men lost on these boats and other corrections have been discovered. For many years, the men of the US Submarine Veterans of WWII relied on this data. The National Memorial, East and West display additional data on the men who perished.

The preparation of this section consisted of two major tasks, compiling the text story sections of each boat and the graphic sections showing the men listed as lost for each of the 52 boats.

The text stories were prepared using an optical scanner that didn't always detect the proper characters, for example the letter "h" as in the word "hit" too often came out as "b" as in the word "bit". Both are proper words, so the spelling checker did not catch all these errors.

The sections, on the lists of men were scanned and converted into a graphic JPEG format, resized for faster loading using a photographic type computer program, then placed at the end of those boat stories showing men lost.

It is noteworthy to mention that these 52 boats are memorialized by the U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII. Assignments of one or more boats to each of the State's Chapters had been made and accepted. Thus, State Memorials, will often display their assigned boat in their site.
